Upcoming Changes in Cataclysm – Professions

I don’t know about you guys, but I cannot wait for the Cataclysm Expansion to be released. I’ll try to keep tracks of what’s coming. So far, here’s what I heard we’ll get when it comes to professions:

- more random enchanted items while leveling Tailoring, Leatherworking and Blacksmithing

- no more specializations!

- more skill points for those items that require a ton of mats

- long cooldowns for end-game materials…

- companion reward for hardworking enchanters!

- new Alchemist’s Stone for Alchemists

- only Flasks will use various vials, elixirs will only require the basic vial

- more gadgets for Engineers, including 1 or maybe 2 companions!

- new (and useful!) minor Glyphs for everyone!

- new Darkmoon Cards, major Glyphs, Off-hands and Relics will be crafted by scribes

- no new ‘Lotus’ just more Volatile Life…

- new gem colors: Hit turns blue, Mastery and Dodge turn yellow, Intellect turns red

- 3 new bandage types! They will have a small cast time and act like a HoT, but the heal will be interrupted by damage.

- more fun in the kitchen! New recipes!

- more cooking dailies that will require picking stuff nearby.

Hope you’re as happy as I am to hear all the good news about the new upcoming features of Cataclysm!

Ruby Sanctum Strategy Guide

Ruby Sanctum (or, as I call it – Not Another Dragon Raid) is the new raid instance launched in patch 3.3.5. It’s located in Dragonblight, in the Chamber of Aspects, under the Wyrmrest Temple. It has one big, bad boss – Halion and 3 minibosses (his lieutenants): Baltharus the WarbornGeneral ZarithrianSaviana Ragefire. Also, it comes in all the new raid versions: 10 players, 25 players, 10 players heroic and 25 players heroic.

Halion Tactics

Halion has 3 phases and players must switch between the normal realm and the shadow realm during this fight.

Halion’s phases:

Ruby Sanctum – Halion Phase 1

This phase lasts until Halion reaches 75%. It starts when he’s engaged in battle and the perimeter is secured by a flame circle that traps the raid group inside. You must stay away from the tail swipe. During this phase, he will do Flame Breath that inflicts 17,500 to 22,500 fire damage in a cone in front of him, will summon Meteor Strike that are some big fireballs falling from the sky and once they land, they will leave a patch of fire on the floor and also send fire lines in four directions. You must stay away from all flames and watch your feet for the hellfire marked ground, where these meteors will strike. He will also target random players and cast Fiery Combustion, that can be (and must be) dispelled as soon as possible, otherwise it will stack Mark of Combustion, leading to Combustion that will spread Fiery Combustion to players in a 6 yards radius. He also has his own buff  Twilight Precision that grants him chance to hit by 5% and decreases all players’ chance to dodge by 20%.

Ruby Sanctum – Halion Phase 2

In this phase you will be fighting Halion in the shadow realm. It starts when he reaches 75% HP and ends when you get him down to 50%. Click the portal he summons, watch out for the tail and cone of breath that is now shadow damage. The Fiery Combustion from the previous phase is now Soul Consumption, that stacks Mark of Consumption, leading to Consumption and the best tactic is to step away from any nearby players, otherwise they will get Soul Consumption. Because of the 2 circles moving around the edges (Shadow Pulsars) everyone must move in a circle (including the tank) to avoid the huge damage they do when they connect through a deathly beam.

Ruby Sanctum – Halion Phase 3

Now the raid must split into 2 groups, one to fight Halion in each realm. The melee should stay and fight him in the shadow realm and the ranged should port to the normal realm, since the melee will have no interruption problem when keeping away from the killer beam and the ranged will find it easier to run from meteors rather than the beams. This phase begins when he reaches 50%. For each of the realms, Halion keeps all his abilities: normal realm = phase 1, shadow realm = phase 2. Besides all those abilities, he now has Corporeality, meaning he will do damage determined by the percentage of damage taken in either of the realms (shown at the top of the screen, begins at 50%). To make it more clear: he takes and and does more damage in the realm he takes less damage in, so if Corporeality < 50% Halion will take more damage in the shadow realm, while taking and doing less in the normal realm; if Corporeality > 50% he will take more damage in the normal realm, while doing and taking less damage in the shadow realm. The ideal solution is to keep him at 50% Corporeality, so the DPS in both realms should be balanced. Careful though, if no damage is dealt in one realm, Halion will begin to rapidly regenerate health.

Halion Heroic Mode changes:

Besides all abilities from the normal mode, there are 2 additions:

Phase 1 Heroic: Fireballs will spawn fire elementals – one large, that needs to be picked up quickly by an off-tank, and a number of smaller ones, which must be nuked down by the raid, as they seem to be untauntable.

Phase 2 Heroic: Instead of 2 deadly beam orbs, four orbs will circle the stage, making it harder to avoid the tail swipe and cone of shadow breath when avoiding the deadly beam.

You may find useful these 2 videos I found on Youtube, presenting the 10 and 25 man encounter on normal mode:

And this video on 10 man Heroic:

You may also want to check out the Ruby Sanctum – Halion loot table listed here.

Best of luck!

Midsummer Fire Festival Guide – Introduction

Midsummer_pic1

What could be more fun in the summer than playing with fire?

The Midsummer Fire Festival is one of the world events that offers us various types of fun activities such as: hunting for 3 adorable companions, achievements, a cool title, some pvp action, a seasonal boss, wicked fancy clothes and loads of travelling… Also, the The Flame KeeperThe Flame Warden count for the What A Long, Strange Trip It’s BeenWhat A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been meta achievement and the Reins of the Violet Proto-Drake!

Overview:
Event period: 2 weeks in June/July
Event currency: Burning Blossom
Daily quests: yes
Blizzard description: A time of ancient magic and tradition, the Midsummer Fire Festival is a time of joyous celebration which begins on the longest day of the year. Gathered around the great fires built at this special time of the year, revelers pass on tales of the elemental spirits and once forgotten magic. A celebration of flame, it is rumored that adventurers who are willing to brave the hardships and dangers of distant lands may learn to harness the power of the flames…

The Quests:

Starting quests:

HORDE:
- The Spinner of Summer Tales – any commoner you may stumble upon will send you to one of these major cities: Dalaran, Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, Silvermoon City, Eversong Woods, Undercity, Stranglethorn Vale, The Storm Peaks, Tanaris, Winterspring or The Barrens, where you will receive the next quests from the Festival Talespinner.

- Incense for the Festival Scorchlings – just give the provided Summer Incense to the nearest festival scorchling that hangs around these Tailspinners.

- A Thief’s Reward – this quest allows you to receive the Crown of the Fire Festival that counts for the King of the Fire Festival achievement. The quest is not as hard as it sounds, all you have to do is steal the 4 flames from Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus and Exodar. You may try on a cute outfit (unless you have the latest tier/pvp gear) to show the opposing faction that you’re there for the quest and not to storm their city, that’s what I did and it worked in 3 out of 4 cases. I went first to Steal Darnassus’s Flame, because the fire is right outside (56,92) and easiest to collect. Then I went for Stealing the Exodar’s Flame (inside the Crystal Hall at 41,25) since I was in the neighborhood. Then you take the boat for the 3rd: Stealing Stormwind’s Flame (found deep inside the city at 49,72) – here you may experience some trouble since it’s not an easy walk and you will annoy several guards and patrols. After you grabbed it, head straight for the subway to Steal Ironforge’s Flame. This flame is found in the Hall of Explorers (64,25) and you don’t have much of a run for it from the subway. Besides the very fashionable crown, you will receive a whole bunch of Burning Blossoms to get yourself some more nice stuff. Hope you make it alive all the way and don’t have to make any graveyard laps!

ALLIANCE:
The Master of Summer Lore - any commoner you may stumble upon will send you to one of these major cities: Dalaran, DarnassusIronforgeStormwind CityWinterspringThe Veiled SeaStranglethorn ValeThe Storm PeaksTanaris and The Barrens, where you will receive the next quests from the Festival Talespinner.

Incense for the Festival Scorchlings – just give the provided Summer Incense to the nearest festival scorchling that hangs around these Tailspinners.

A Thief’s Reward – this quest allows you to receive the Crown of the Fire Festival that counts for the King of the Fire Festival achievement. The quest is not as hard as it sounds, all you have to do is steal the 4 flames from Orgrimmar, Undercity, Silvermoon City and Thunder Bluff. You may try on a cute outfit (unless you have the latest tier/pvp gear) to show the opposing faction that you’re there for the quest and not to storm their city. The easiest to complete is the Stealing the Undercity’s Flame since the bonfire is right at the entrance (62,66). You could head next for the Stealing Silvermoon’s Flame (69,39) since it’s on the same continent. Then you can go for Stealing Orgrimmar’s Flame found at 46,39 near The Valley of Wisdom, I would suggest the “back door” entrance to the city that you can easily reach by heading North along the river from Ratchet. The 4th – Stealing Thunder Bluff’s Flame is found at 20,26 on Spirit Rise. Besides the very fashionable crown, you will receive a whole bunch of Burning Blossoms to get yourself some more nice stuff. Hope you make it alive all the way and don’t have to make any graveyard laps!

Daily quests:

- Torch Tossing – this quest will unlock the daily More Torch Tossing. The trick I use is to drag the Practice Torches in a keybound slot on my toolbar, start the quest, face the marked braziers, mouse-over them and hit my key.

- Torch Catching – this quest will unlock More Torch Catching. My trick is to follow the shadow of the torch. Best spot for this quest is the capital city where the floors have a lighter color. The torch will get tossed behind you each time, so catch-turn-chase the shadow. A high level of spell detail and the camera set up to look down on you will help. I think the first catch is the tricky one, but it only has a few “landing” points and with little practice you will master it well.

Quest chains:

- Unusual Activity – This quest can be picked up from the NPCs next to the bonfires of each capital city. You need to pack your bags, fly to Zoram Strand in Ashenvale and find some Twilight Cultists to nuke. They walk around the BFD entrance, at about 15,19. The drop rate is very high and they are level 20-22. Once you’re done, use the Totemic Beacon and wait for the wolf spirit to deliver the quest.

- An Innocent Disguise – Get your crab suit on and follow the blue torches. They will lead you to a small camp, at 09,12. After you’ve heard the discussion, you’re done. Call the wolf again and deliver the quest.

- Inform the Elder – You may choose to deliver this quest to any capital city.

- Striking Back – this quest is available to players level 22 and above (6 versions adapted to levels – 22, 32, 43, 51, 60, 67) and it will require you to slay a Glacial Templar in an area suited for your level. They reside in huge Ice Stones, are immune to frost damage and my advice is to clear the area a bit before engaging him.

- Ahune, the Frost Lord – enter Slave Pens dungeon in Coilfang Reservoir – Zangarmarsh and speak with Numa Cloudsister.

- Ahune is Here! – Numa Cloudsister will ask you to find Luma Skymother who is just a hallway deep in the Slave Pens.

- Summon Ahune – Luma will give you a Earthen Ring Magma Totem that will allow you to summon Lord Ahune.

- Shards of Ahune – The first time you will defeat Ahune, you will receive the Shards of Ahune. Once you trade them to Luna, you will get to choose one of the 2 seasonal tabards: Tabard of Summer Skies and Tabard of Summer Flames.

LORD AHUNE LOOT - found inside the Satchel of Chilled Goods

- Frostscythe of Lord Ahune

- Icebound Cloak

- Cloak of the Frigid Winds

- Shroud of Winter’s Chill

- The Frost Lord’s War Cloak

- The Frost Lord’s Battle Shroud

- Frigid Frostling

- Scorched Stone

- Huge Snowball

- Formula: Enchant Weapon – Deathfrost (used to drop in the old loot table – has not been confirmed to drop this year)

How to start a pet collection

Hello there (soon to be) pet collectors!
This is going to be a series of articles that will untangle everything related to becoming the owner of most of the cute and sweet pets available in WoW.

Let’s first go through the first and most affordable set you can easily get in the major capital cities:

Horde:
Visit Orgrimmar and work your way up in the Valley of Spirits and look for a troll followed by 3 snakes. His name is Xan’tish and he will sell you Black Kingsnake, Brown Snake and Crimson Snake for 50s each (or less, depending on your reputation with the Orcs).

Thunder Bluff (ah… my favorite capital city in old – soon to be new – Azeroth…), if you don’t know it, may be a very sinuous place. But if you go up the big tower there, stop on the middle terrace and take the path that circles it, you will come across a small hut, where Halpa sells an adorable Prairie Dog for 50s or less, depending on how the Taurens feel about you.

Next, we cover Undercity: what could a creepy guy named Jeremiah Payson that spends his time under the main stairs in the middle of the city sell? You guessed it right. Cockroaches for 50s, maybe less if the Forsaken like you… They are quite funny as they have a flying animation every now and then while following you.

In a small village called Fairbreeze, near Silvermoon City, you will find Jilanne, the Dragonhawk Hatchlings vendor. The Golden Dragonhawk Hatchling, Red Dragonhawk Hatchling and Silver Dragonhawk Hatchling cost 50s each and of course, depending on your reputation with the Blood Elves, you may get a discount.

Alliance:
We’ll start with the Night Elves. They have some impressive capital city, Darnassus. Near the main gates, you shall come across Shylenai who will sell you Great Horned Owl and Hawk Owl for 50s each.

Yarlyn Amberstill residing in Dun Morogh (near Ironforge) will sell you a Rabbit Crate (Snowshoe) for 50s, thus teaching you to summon an adorable Snowshoe Rabbit. Yarlyn seems to buy a lot of coffee with the gold she gets from us, since she’s always running around, making the purchase of this pet quite a challenge.

Now, on to my favorite part: The Crazy Cat Lady living near Stormwind City. I’m sure every neighborhood has one, so why shouldn’t the Elwynn Forest have one? Her name is Donni Anthania and she sells 4 cuddly cats: Cat Carrier (Bombay), Cat Carrier (Cornish Rex), Cat Carrier (Orange Tabby) and Cat Carrier (Silver Tabby) for 50s each.

Also, if you’re the persevering type, you may want to track down Lil Timmy in Stormwind City. He spawns approximately every 3 hours near Cathedral Square and begins his route counter-clockwise while advertising his product. He has a very precious kitty to sell for 60s: Cat Carrier (White Kitten) in a limited supply of 1! It sells for quite some gold on the neutral Auction House, if you already have it, so if you randomly come across Timmy, don’t hesitate to buy one more!

In Exodar, down in the Crystal Hall, you will find Sixx, the Moth Keeper. She’s not only a ‘keeper’, but also a vendor of 3 fuzzy moth companions: Blue Moth Egg, White Moth Egg and Yellow Moth Egg for 50s each.

All prices above are subject to the faction reputation discount, of course.

All the opposite faction pets can be acquired through the neutral Auction House, so don’t panic if you’re a Tauren and want to have a cuddly bunny by your side instead of a fierce snake :)

Next time we’ll go through the rest of the critters you can buy! Stay tuned!
